Island Comfort: A Deep Dive into Ramen Açores (Formerly Ramen Bambu) in Ponta Delgada

The Azores archipelago is a culinary paradise known for its unique Portuguese seafood, cozido das furnas, and the incredible Azorean beef. But sometimes, even on an island getaway, your soul craves something else: the deep, warming comfort of a perfect bowl of ramen.

During our visit to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, we found that unexpected warmth at Ramen Açores. Located right by the water at Portas Do Mar (and previously known to locals as Ramen Bambu), this spot is a delightful detour from traditional Azorean fare.

Here’s our honest review of this Asian gem by the Atlantic.

📍 The Location: A Cozy Spot by the Marina

Ramen Açores is perfectly situated near the marina. Its location at Portas Do Mar makes it easily accessible for tourists strolling the waterfront and locals enjoying the evening. The atmosphere is casual, quick, and ideal for a satisfying lunch or an easygoing dinner after a day of hiking or whale watching.

In a town full of traditional tascas and seafood grills, the simple, modern setting offers a refreshing change of pace.

🍜 The Menu: A Focus on the Fundamentals

The menu here is straightforward, centered around classic ramen styles with options for everyone. They focus on the fundamentals: pork, beef, and tofu bases.

Our Highlights:

  • The Porco Ramen (€13.35): This is their most popular bowl, and for good reason. The broth (likely a variation of Tonkotsu or Shoyu) was savory and comforting. It was loaded with tender pork slices, half a marinated egg, bean sprouts, cilantro, and a sheet of nori. It hit all the right notes for a classic, filling bowl of ramen.

  • Vegan Tofu Ramen (€13.35): It's always a pleasant surprise to find thoughtful vegan options. Their tofu ramen is a robust, flavorful alternative. It features noodles, crispy tofu, and a sweet and sour kick that elevates the broth, ensuring it's not just a watered-down alternative.

  • The Ramen Grande (€16.60): For those with a serious appetite—or those who can’t decide—the Grande combines beef, pork, and tofu. It's an absolute feast in a bowl, perfect for sharing (if you can bear to part with it) or for refueling after a long day of exploring the island.

Starters & Sides

Don't skip the sides! The Tofu Panado (fried tofu) and the Gyozas make for excellent, quick starters. They offer a great textural contrast to the soft noodles and rich broth.

🔥 Heat Check: Spicier Than Expected!

One notable piece of advice we took from other reviews (and experienced ourselves) is that the spice level can be quite intense! If you order a spicy option or ask for a little kick, be prepared. Some patrons reported being surprised by the heat even when asking for a low spice level. If you are sensitive, ask for the spice on the side!

💡 Good to Know: Ramen Bambu is Ramen Açores

A quick note for those searching for it: the restaurant recently changed its name from Ramen Bambu to Ramen Açores. If you see reviews for the former, rest assured it’s the same great place!

🤩 The Verdict: An Essential Pit Stop

While it won't replace the experience of visiting an authentic ramen-ya in Tokyo, Ramen Açores offers a high-quality, deeply satisfying, and affordable ramen experience on a small Atlantic island.

It’s fast, the staff is friendly, and on a misty Azorean evening, a bowl of hot broth with fresh noodles is the ultimate island comfort food. If you're craving Asian flavors in Ponta Delgada, head to the port and find your new favorite bowl.
